Getting There
Air: Bangalore Airport is 13 km east of the City Station.
Rail: There are two railway stations in Bangalore. The main station is well connected to all major Indian cities.
Road: Bangalore has a large bus terminus, which is near the railway station.
Things to do
Vidhana Soudha Built in 1954, in granite. Houses the State Legislature and the Secretariat. Illuminated on Sundays at 1900 hrs.
Lal Bagh It is 240 acres of beautifully sculpted gardens, with a rare collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants. Glass House (built on the lines of London’s Crystal Palace) covers 18,000 sq. ft.
Tipu’s Palace Begun by Haider Ali and completed by Tipu sultan in 1791. Tipu called it ‘The Envy of Heaven’. Constructed mainly in wood, it has intricately sculpted arches, surrounded by exquisite minarets.
Bangalore Palace Constructed in 1887, built similar to the medieval castle in Normandy and England, its interiors have very elegant woodcarvings.
Bannerghatta National Park Bisons, Lions, crocodiles, elephants, monkeys. The Tourism Department vehicles tours inside the sanctuary.
Nandi Hills 4850 feet above sea level. Good for picnics or daytime getaways. Early mornings are the best.
Bull Temple Built by Kempa Gowda, it has a huge monolithic Bull, 4.5 meters in height and 6.5 meters in length. It is revered for being the vahana (vehicle) of Lord Shiva.
Cubbon Park 300 acres of natural gardens, children’s amusement park and restaurant. Private parties for children arranged with cartoons, etc. in the children’s park.
The Big Banyan Tree Branches of this massive tree cover 3 acres! Awesome sight. Good for picnics. (In good Bangalore tradition.)
Nrityagram Dance Village India’s only village for classical dances. Conducted Tours with explanation of Indian Philosophy, culture, lecture-demonstrations on dance, vegetarian lunch (chemical-free, home-grown vegetables).
Science Museum The Vishveshwaraya Industrial and Technological Museum depicts the history of technical development. It houses working models of different machines.
Mysore Lies 125 km from Bangalore. Start with the picturesque spot at Ramohalli. Here, an ancient banyan tree spreads over two acres! Your trip takes you through the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary on the rocky islands of the Cauvery River. Closer to Mysore is Srirangapatnam, its old capital. Here you can visit the Island Fortress, Dariya Daulat and the Gumbaz.
Silk and sandalwood, palaces and temples… that’s Mysore. As the sun sets, visit Brindavan – the fairyland of gardens – and the magic of its musical fountains and coloured lights.
Bandipur Take it at a more leisurely pace with a two-day tour, carrying on from Mysore to the wildlife sanctuary at Bandipur located on the edge of the Madumalai forest of Tamil Nadu. Riding an elephant, you can see tigers, elephants, spotted deers, bisons, peacocks and other animal and birds.
Belur And Halebid About 160 km from Bangalore at Sravanbelagola, stands the 17 metres tall statue of the Jain saint, Gomateshwara. You actually have to climb the 500 rock steps to get closer. Nearby, in the ancient towns of Halebid and Belur, you will find examples of the Hoysala temple art, scenes taken from life and sculpted into soapstone walls, dating back to the 10th century.
